Composing: Doctor Sleep (Custom Pitch)

It’s Stephen King season again… The sequel to the 2017 highly successful IT reboot is about to hit cinemas and Doctor Sleep, the follow up to The Shining is not far behind it… We of course had to pitch!

Firstly we were asked to sent in a short cue intended to demo some SFX which could be used as toolkit for the initial campaign. Mike purchased a cheap kids chalkboard, some kids chalk and got to work recording some scrawling, he also managed to record some gas canisters and merge them into some atmospheric sound design to demo the potential use… This cue is called “SFX Toolkit Pitch V1.2” (see below).

This was followed by what was intended for use in the back end of one of the main trailers in which we reinvented Wendy Carlos & Rachel Elkind’s Main Titles theme by transcribing the progression and adding bigger horns, strings, hybrid percussive elements and of course stop downs.

The film is currently in post-production and at this time, we are unsure if the cue has been placed… The proposed cue is imaginatively entitled “RedRum2” give it a listen via the soundcloud embeds below!

Composing: 13 Reasons Why - Season 3 (Custom Pitch)

Netflix came knocking again, this time asking us to “trailerize” a couple of tracks to see if they would function against footage for their trailer for the upcoming season three of 13 Reasons Why.

We were given the full stems two tracks, Timber Timbre - Run From Me and These New Puritan - Into The Fire. From here, we essentially analysed the songs, set up the sessions accordingly and remixed them adding hybrid orchestral elements to both.

While the studio decided to ultimately use a different song entirely, the exercise was interesting and we think we came up with some cool ideas.

Composing : The King (Custom Pitch)

We have been asked to compose and pitch a short trailer cue for consideration of placement in the upcoming David Michôd directed Netflix film, “The King”.

While the brief was somewhat descriptive, the only real base information given was that “The screenplay is adapted from the plays Henry V and Henry IV Part I & II by William Shakespeare”.

That being said, for those who know the story of Henry IV, we know what to expect in terms of story; what’s going to be the most interesting is the approach taken.

The film is currently in post-production and at this time, we are unsure if the cue has been placed… The proposed cue is entitled “Monarch”, give it a listen via the soundcloud embed below!





Composing: Crazy Woman Got A Gun

Mike recently completed the score for the short film "Crazy Woman Got A Gun" on behalf of AVA - All Visions Align. The short is currently circulating around the festivals ( notably #FilmCon18 and Cinefest in Los Angeles) before putting the project forward for funding in order to facilitate the production of the feature film...

Producing: Clare Estelle - Somehow

During the final months of 2017, Mike was contacted by his friend and colleague Steve Hope-Wynne to see if he would consider getting involved in the production of Clare Estelle's collaborative track "Somehow", and if he would contribute some musical elements of his own. 

The pair had been working together and experimenting and bouncing ideas off each other for a while; Clare had composed the music and written lyrics alongside performing piano, acoustic guitar and some percussion. Through various collaborations, Clare then sourced Irish whistle (Sam Piper), drums (Stuart Hemphill) and bass guitar (Phil Smith) with Steve adding electric guitars and a variety of his own vocal section recordings.

It was clear from the first couple of listens and early conversations that Clare was telling a very vivid cinematic story and through the user of layering and cleaver production techniques, the aim was to evoke a mental narrative for the audience to experience while listening. As such, during our first meeting and when first approaching the Pro Tools session at the AEP studio, Mike began to establish a workflow within the session and take in the various creative mixing techniques and philosophies which had been applied by Steve in the months leading to his involvement.

Mike's job was to build on Steve's initial mix adding balance, cleaning up the existing tracks and fades, creating room for the various sections of the track to work in the narrative context and to question the use of background and foreground. The track is very unconventional in approach which gave room to experiment and even compliment imperfections, something very refreshing in our current state of relentless digital perfection. Alongside this, Mike contributed a Duduk counter melody to work alongside the flute, extreme low sustained double bass notes to carry the darker and deeper parts of the track and some elements of percussion to backup that which was already there.

Producing: ARK.S (Cinematic Hip Hop)

This is a really interesting project which we are crazy excited about! Hiphop artist ARK.S and Mike have been mates for years with key conversations surrounding not just music, but film too! Alongside his music, ARK.S is an avid moviegoer and lover of film scores in general which pretty much laid the foundation of a project taking off!. finally after a few "bro, are we ever gonna actually do this?" (The photo to the left was that moment to by precise) chats, we have begun producing what I can only describe as "Cinematic Hip Hop" together.

Mike has currently written two tracks for ARK.S and is in the process of composing more! This post is going to grow as time goes on but for the meantime, Its safe to announce that Aurora Eclipse Productions in association with 9E Productions will be looking to release a Single to all major digital stores during September 2017 with an EP release to follow.

Composing: Tangitise

Our friend and colleague Steve Hope-Wynne over at Tangitise Ltd approached us with a brief to compose a short music score complimenting the branding for his company branding and voice over introduction. 

After reviewing the footage, Mike decided to take a modern-meets-elegant approach and employed the use of synthesisers, flutes, strings, horns, pianos and light percussion to complete the piece.

Composing : Jurassic World 2 - Fallen Kingdom (Custom Pitch)

We are thrilled to have been asked to compose music for consideration for the upcoming teaser trailer for the new Jurassic World film, “Fallen Kingdom”. These are currently with the trailer house, fingers and toes are all firms crossed!

Mike was so close, but our pithes didn’t quite make the cut… Mike took a very organic approach as directed, but ultimately a more modern approach was adopted. We have been able to release the tracks and Mike did a run through of both pitches on his Youtube channel. We have embedded both cues below and the walkthroughs below and hope you enjoy them!
